Couples and strangers have told me that my photography style is “whimsical”, “fun”, “romantic”, “intimate”, “joyful”, “natural”, and full of love without any fake poses where they could look staged and uncomfortable. If you’re couple thinking about allowing me to capture your memories, please consider, all couples are different and their reaction to the poses I guide them to aren’t always the same. That’s perfect! I am trying to capture the moment unfold naturally, not stage or fake it. Some couples laugh when I tell them to stare in each other’s eyes, others may go for a soft kiss. Whatever reactions happen during the photo session, it is perfect because it’s YOUR story.
There is a simple recipe for me and my couples to achieve the fun and romantic poses without looking staged:
I have to get to know the couple, their story, and expectations. This way I can capture in a fun and romantic storytelling way. I ask questions like, “how did you two meet?”, “what do you do in your free time?”, “what does a perfect date sound like to you?”, “Are you the kind of couple who adventures or enjoys each other’s company by staying home and enjoying tv?”, “What makes you unique as a couple? do you like to collect chapstick?…eat at all the Italian restaurants every Thursday night?…foster pets?…grab each other’s butts?… randomly act as if the floor is lava?… make-up songs about cleaning the house???”
If we are doing an engagement or couples session – I send a link to my preparation guide, so they know what to expect and bring. Some ask for outfit advice which is linked here.
We show up to the session and this is where we take the first few minutes reconnecting and catching up. Typically I explain once we get to the first scenic location that I need to test my camera against the lighting. Usually (as a warm-up) I have them start with the common forehead-to-forehead pose and then traditional looking at the camera. After that, I can sense the tension loosen up and we try new poses so I can capture their true fun and romantic personalities.
Depending on the moment, I sometimes have the couple stand back to back and I count to five until they can turn around and see eacother. This is how some react 🙂
Not everyone dances like Cinderella and her prince. Some rock out, while others take the opportunity to grab the booty.
This is typically the favorite pose. As I am usually about 6+ feet away, I can’t hear what they are whispering to another. If it were me and my partner, I would whisper in his ear, “beep boop bop scoop” to get him to laugh but also tell him… “I can’t imagine a world where I will never hear your laugh again”
This is fun to do on hot summer days haha – just imagine that you are in a very cold iglooo….
Oh the laughs… great way to start or end a photo session.
This romantic pose is saved for the grand finale.
