This is a blog post written for women seeking advice on how to prepare wedding hair and makeup services. In addition, it’s an interview with Jersey City, NJ’s leading hair, eyebrows, and makeup beauty specialist, @nino.davis.
A preferred vendor and professional artist in Jersey City for hair, eyebrow, and makeup services.
I am a Jersey City, NJ wedding photographer and I found one the best hair and makeup artists in the Jersey City area, @nino.davis. I interviewed Nina by sending her a list of frequently asked questions, and her answers are quoted below. This blog post is helpful, whether you are planning to prepare for:
I cannot stress enough how important it is to get ready for your hair and makeup trial. We will cover information on how to prepare for your session, tips for preparing your face and hair, and what to wear – I’ll explain.
Believe me, when I say that absolutely every client of mine (despite age, complexion and style) says that they want “natural” makeup, and yet each of them mean completely different things. This is why I try to avoid verbal descriptions and rely on visual references.
Prepare a mood board
Visual references are the only way to ensure that we are on the same page about your makeup expectations!
I usually suggest using a Pinterest boardto bring together a combination of makeup and hairstyles that you like. Please, try not to overthink if the model has a similar skin tone or if her eyes are shaped differently. Right now you are creating a vibe, and general aesthetic.
Next step (very important one): look at chosen images and try to find what is common among them. What is that that attracts your attention? That will help you put your finger on some details and reveal the most desired features.
Lastly I ask my clients to come up with a few favorite headshot or selfie pictures of themselves. That allows me to understand their comfort zone, what about their makeup look is super important.
When ‘homework’ is done, time to prepare for the session with your professional hair and makeup artist.
Prepare your hair and face
I always ask my clients to meet me with a freshly washed and makeup-free face. Her hair should be fully dry after recently washed hair.
What to wear
I highly suggest wearing a white and pretty top/dress for your makeup trial. First of all, the colors we wear close to our faces bring reflection and change the perception of the makeup. Secondly, a person will feel more comfortable being all dolled up and beautified when they dress accordingly. If you’re worried about getting the top dirty, bring a robe to protect it.
And my bonus suggestion: if you have a chance to set your hair and makeup trial on your wedding dress fitting day – go for it! You will definitely get the best bride-to-be experience possible.
As a wedding photographer, I would recommend to also scheduling a bridal hair and makeup trial on the day of your engagement photoshoot. More tips on how to prepare for your engagement photos here.
Expect a bridal makeup and hair trial cost to be the same as the cost of the makeup services on the day of.
From the point of view of an artist it’s the same (or even bigger) amount of work! Personally, I like to setup a complimentary video consultation prior to the trial, during the trial, I take 3 hours for both makeup and hair (up to 2 hours for makeup alone). Services on a wedding day can take about 2 hours (1 hour for only makeup).
During the trial session we allow changes of the look (that do not require starting the work from scratch).
Bridal services are much more than just a hair and makeup application! It’s a pampering experience that includes consultations, skin prep, face massage, delicate and customized approach and creating a look that will empower you and make you feel truly special.

I always give my brides a touch up kit and always wish they do not remember to use it – that would mean they were enjoying themselves so much, touching up a lip gloss didn’t even matter!
However, I ensure they have a sample of the lip product we used, reversible lip brush, q-tips, powdered puff, and other little necessities – just in case.
Bridal makeup takes about one hour. It’s more than enough time for skin prep, face massage, makeup, and individual lash application
Absolutely! I work both with hair and makeup and usually, my brides want a complete look done by me. I also offer brow services, ask more about this service on the consultation call.
I match your wedding hairstyle to your makeup look and I can make a contemporary, effortless, classy, and timeless updo, half updo, or down hairstyle. On the contrary, it has to enhance and compliment your beauty; your bridal hair should look soft, and be pleasant to touch.
If you can’t decide on your wedding hairstyle, think about how you do your hair when you want to feel empowered. On your wedding day, you want to be pretty, comfortable, confident and the most “yourself”!
