This blog guide will explain how to prepare for professional hair and makeup services before a photoshoot. Some tips below are provided by NYC and NJ professional makeup artist, Marie of Shameless Beauty
About Marie (professional makeup artist at Shameless Beauty)
Do you know how some people claim, “I was born to be a teacher”? Like, they just know? Well, Marie literally came out of the womb with Chanel lipstick in hand ready to claim her name as a professional makeup artist and shameless in fashion.
Marie was born in Florida, grew up in Boring, Oregon (yes, it’s a real town), and moved to New Jersey in 2020. While living in Oregon, she got married, was diagnosed with breast cancer, gave birth to her little angel, beat cancer’s butt, started a salon, successfully sold it along with her house, and moved her family as far as possible from Oregon to start fresh in New Jersey. Since the 2020 move, she has been growing her @ShamelessBeauty_NYC brand as an NYC and New Jersey professional makeup artist.

Dry & washed

Yes
- Should I have any specific hair products in my hair before a photoshoot?
No products, please

Heat protectant, heat styler (ex; curling iron/blow dryer), hair spray, texture spray, dry finishing spray, shine spray, sometimes a gel to work through for texture purposes
- How will you be styling my hair?

Yes
Professional makeup preparation FAQ
- Should I wash my face with particular products before a photoshoot?
Just a clean face is all you will need. Personal at-home products are fine, but please do not moisturize or add SPF
- Should I moisturize before a photoshoot?
No, I will prep your face before applying makeup, including moisturizers
- What products do you use to prep my face with before makeup application?
This varies by client. I have a variety of products and after assessing each client I will use high-end skincare products based on their skin needs.
- What should I wear as I get my hair/makeup glam done before a photoshoot?
A tank top that’s easy to remove over the head is best. Sometimes I apply makeup on the collarbones and shoulders too.
- Where is the best place to set up a hair and makeup preparation station?
Near a window with natural light. If natural light from a window is not available, I will provide light. The location will need to provide a table and barstool/directors chair.
- Do you recommend providing makeup photo inspiration of the look I want?
Yes, I love when a client shows me their vision
- Do you provide individual or strip lashes?
I provide both
- Do you sanitize your brushes/products?
Yes, after every use
- What style of makeup do you specialize in?
Full glam with a glow finish #shameless

6 things you should know about when booking a hair and makeup artist service
- When looking at makeup inspiration, keep in mind your eye shape as compared with the inspiration. For instance, eyeliner and lashes look different on an almond shape eye vs a cat-eye shape eye.
- Avoid sun and self-tanner before makeup application and a photoshoot
- Let your makeup artist know if you don’t have the following:
- On-site parking
- Elevator
- Stool
- Window with natural light
- Table for makeup/hair products
- Please allow about 2 hours for full makeup glam and 1 hour for styling your hair. Each hair and makeup is different, so double-check with them.
- Eliminate all possible distractions, this includes phone use, children, and pets.
- Feeling shameless about the way you look is very important, so please do speak up if you have concerns. Rest assured, I will photoshop/retouch skin texture and blemishes in your photos. If you’re not used to glam makeup, request individual lashes instead of strip lashes to help make it look more natural than full glam with strip lashes. Adding lashes is necessary to make your eyes pop!
