My experience at the Superior Court Administration Building for an Elopement

• Street parking is quite easy to find
• The building is next door to the beautiful Justice Brennan Courthouse. Although we didn’t make time to take photos there after the ceremony, it would be an ideal location to take photos! (see above)

• As a standard, I had to walk through a security checkpoint. I went up the elevators and met the couple and their witnesses. We were scheduled for their elopement ceremony with the judge at 8:30 am, but it took about a half hour until we were welcomed in.
• We did not know photographers had to ask the judge for permission to photograph in the courtroom. The security at the front entrance had warned me. I was a little nervous for that reason before entering the room. I did ask, and the judge cheerfully approved my request, and it was a relief! I was able to photograph anywhere I wanted, even with flash.
• The ceremony was about 5 minutes long, and other people (strangers waiting to elope too) waited in the pews and watched
• The judge we had was so pleasant and kind. Even waived hello to the bride’s parents, patiently waiting to witness their daughter get married over Facetime. (They live in Ukraine and could not be there)
• The hallways interiors reminded me of an old dirty high school without any updates to their furnishings, walls and floors. Maybe even a place where a scary movie could be filmed. lol
• Where we were waiting, there was a perfect place for window light portraits without a flash or high ISO. I took the couple there and their witnesses for photo ops too.

Where to take elopement photos in Jersey City

The easy answer to this is Liberty State Park. The park is just about 20 minutes away from the courthouse. The just-married couple joined me in my car to be escorted to 1 Audrey Zapp Dr., which has free parking in the dead-end parking lot near Empty Sky Memorial.

Can I have a small wedding and elope in Liberty State Park?

The answer is no. However, you can take photos in the park once you are married without a photo permit fee. Here is the email when I asked officials at Liberty State park:

Hello,

We do not permit any weddings at Liberty State Park. This goes for elopements and ceremonies as well.

If you wish to hold the desired event at their space, we recommend contacting our park tenants.
