Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! If you’re reading this… it’s coming around the corner, isn’t it?! Don’t panic! You came to the right place. Matter of fact, I started writing my vows 3 weeks before and then finished writing them a few nights before! It’s totally normal to wait last minute. One of the most iconic parts of your wedding day is sharing your personal vows, and you definitely want them memorable. Whether you’re planning to share vows in private or in front of everyone at the ceremony, this guide will help you with writing vows that wow. Here are some tips to help you create vows that are anything but boring.
Take a moment to reminisce about your relationship. What memorable moments have you shared? What obstacles have you conquered together? Jot down a few of your favorite memories, inside jokes, and defining experiences. This reflection can spark some great ideas!
Questions to answer as you write ideas for your vows:
Whatever you wrote down, type it up in a Google Doc or Word document so you can start organizing your thoughts more effectively. Here is the outline I used for my wedding vows, which you can follow:
Sprinkle your unique love story into your vows? You could mention how you met or that wild date you can’t forget.
Instead of generic promises, dive into specifics that capture the essence of your relationship. For instance, instead of saying, “I’ll always support you,” try something like, “I promise to always be your biggest cheerleader, event when you’re trying to beat a video game level.” It’s details like these that make your vows meaningful and could make people laugh.
Feeling a bit stuck? Look to your favorite songs, poems, or quotes for inspiration. A lovely line can help express how you feel—just make sure it blends well with your own words so it feels natural and heartfelt. My husband (groom) is into video games and loves Pokemon, so I have a little Ash Ketchum quote, “I choose you,” in the mix.
Let’s keep it snappy! Aiming for about two to five minutes for your vows helps keep everyone’s attention without going off on a tangent. You’ve got plenty to say, but a brief heartfelt message can go a long way! And if you finish early, you get more cocktail hour time to eat and mingle with guests lol
Once you’ve drafted your vows, take some time to read them aloud to yourself multiple times. Practice reading them while timing yourself; this will help you get comfortable with the flow and may reveal some adjustments you’d like to make. Additionally, this practice can ease your pre-wedding jitters, as you’ll feel confident about how you want to sound. I also used Grammarly to help fine-tune my thoughts and organize my sentences clearly. Sometimes I struggle to come up with creative wording, and Grammarly was a valuable tool for improving my sentence structure when writing my vows. Try Grammarly for free now!
