Hi, I’m Miranda, and I’m a wedding photographer in New Jersey. It’s been about 17 days since my wedding, and I have a wealth of experience in the wedding industry as a wedding photographer. I know how to find the perfect artist for wedding day.
I understand how overwhelming the planning process can be, and I want to share my insights to help you avoid the same mistakes I made. In this blog, I’ll provide guidance on how to find the right makeup artist for your wedding and outline key questions you should ask before making your decision. I hope you find these tips helpful as you prepare for your big day. Feel free to copy and paste the questions below to keep them handy for your emails, direct messages, or phone calls.
Research is essential when looking for the perfect makeup artist for your wedding day. I suggest using Instagram as a key resource, as many makeup artists share photos of their work on this platform. You can also explore options on TikTok, YouTube, or through Google searches. Instagram is often the preferred social media platform for finding makeup artists because it allows you to easily scroll through their profiles and view their portfolios all in one place.
If you’re in New Jersey or NYC, I made a list of the best NJ and NYC makeup artists, and it gets updated every few months as I work with new ones who exceed expectations.
First step in finding the perfect makeup artist is doing your research on Instagram. Make an account if you don’t have one and use the search bar to type in hashtag #JerseyCityMakeupArtist or #NJMakeupArtist or #NJbridalmakeupartist or #NYCweddingmakeupartist . Any variation of the city/state and keyword makeup artist will populate different results. When makeup artists post a photo or video on Instagram and use one of the hashtags, then when a bride-to-be (like you) searches the hashtag, their post should pop up in research.
As you scroll through the posts/images, click on the ones you resonate with most. You can save the image, click on the account to follow or view more of their portfolio work on their profile. It’s likely you’ll spend hours looking for the perfect makeup artist for your wedding day, so you will forget who you liked – you can screenshot the accounts or, if you’re super organized, start a saved collection (flag icon to the right side) on Instagram to refer back to when you’re ready to narrow down and contact makeup artists.
This is the secret sauce to finding the perfect makeup artist for your wedding day. When you research your favorites and start saving/screenshotting the makeup artists on Instagram, do some investigating by looking at the tags on the images/videos. You can do it two ways.
One way is by going to the makeup artist profile, and clicking on the tagged tab.
Another way is to click on the images/video and then click on the people icon in the bottom left corner to see who is tagged. Hopefully you find out who the bride was! This is the secret I have been waiting to share.
When you believe you’ve found the perfect makeup artist for your wedding, it’s important to establish trust based on past reviews. Additionally, you should feel comfortable with the artist’s personality and portfolio. Before you get to know the makeup artist better, you can assess their reliability by reaching out to their previous clients (brides) and requesting honest feedback about their experiences through direct messages on Instagram.
These are the questions to ask past brides/clients of the makeup artist you’re considering booking for your wedding day. Feel free to copy and paste or remove any questions that don’t matter to you.
