If you’re thinking about doing your engagement photos somewhere with gorgeous flowers, pretty trails, and that classic garden look—Cross Estate Gardens in NJ is a great choice.
Located in Bernardsville, NJ, Cross Estate Gardens is one of those spots that looks great almost all year long. As a New Jersey wedding photographer at Suess Moments, I’ve done a bunch of engagement sessions here and it’s seriously one of my go-to spots. It’s especially awesome if you’re going for a whimsical garden romance photo shoot.
This spot is part of the Morristown National Historical Park, and it has a nice mix of open garden areas, stone paths, tall trees, a water tower (aka Repunzel’s tower), a hobbit house, and a vine-covered pergola. It feels private and peaceful—and there’s always a great photo location just a few steps away.
I always suggest planning your shoot about two -three hours before sunset. This is called “golden hour”—and the light is soft, flattering, and gives your photos a warm glow. It also makes skin tones look amazing!
If you’re coming from Jersey City or nearby areas, it’s about a 45-minute to 1-hour drive. Totally worth it for a one-hour photo session. It’s quiet, beautiful, and easy to move around to different scenery – from a beautiful garden, tree lined paths, enchanting wonders, and so much more. It’s a place where no corner is a bad place for photos. A place where you can get lost and feel like you stepped into a storybook.
What to wear: I recommend wearing something comfortable and flowy, as this will allow you to have fun during your photoshoot. Dresses that flow tend to look more romantic when you’re moving around. Your partner can wear neutral colors, while you might opt for either neutral tones or a pop of color that complements your favorite flower or wedding theme.

Cross Estate Gardens is one of those places that looks great no matter when you go. Whether you want blooming flowers or colorful leaves, it gives you that natural garden vibe without needing to go far from home. It’s a favorite of mine for good reason.
