Your Engagement Session Planning Help Guide: Planning Your Engagement Shoot

October 25, 2019

What to Expect for your Engagement Photo Shoot

So you’ve booked your engagement photo session…and now you’re freaking out a little about all the things.
I get it, this might be your first photo shoot and it’s totally normal to feel a bit uncomfortable in front of the camera at first.
But don’t worry, you’re in good hands.

The Lead Up

Leading up to your engagement shoot day, you are highly encouraged to screenshot and save your favorite Pinterest and Instagram photos. Then, either by DMs, emails, or a Pinterest board link, share those images with me, so I can get an idea of what you’re looking for. This also helps me get inspired before the session. I wouldn’t want to steal someone else’s creative work by replicating the exact image. But, with the inspiration of the photo you shared with me, I promise I will do my best to make your image original and something you’ll want to frame.

Pretty important that you have your nails done within 3 days of shoot and get your hair/makeup professionally done. This is typically a perfect opportunity to try out your hair and makeup artist before your wedding day. Find a local one using  searching Instagram / Pinterest hashtags like:

#NYCHairstylist

#NYCmua

#NYCweddinghairstylist

#NYCweddingmakeupartist

#NYCmakeupartist

Or you can get more specific to where you live or the photoshoot location. They can come to you or you can go to them:

#BrooklynHairstylist

#Brooklynmua

#Brooklynweddinghairstylist

#Brooklynweddingmakeupartist

#Brooklynmakeupartist

I also recommend stylists from my preferred vendors list. Many of these vendors also offer exclusive discounts to my clients just by mentioning my name! 🙂

PRO TIPS BEFORE YOUR ENGAGEMENT SHOOT

→ Request sample lipstick/gloss for the shoot for easy touch ups
→ Don’t apply lip product until you had brushed your teeth
→ Request waterproof mascara and natural looking adhesive eyelashes to enhance your eyes and reduce risk of smeared mascara
→ Try and skip the SPF makeup as flashback in photos will make you appear ghostly

ENGAGEMENT SHOOT OUTFITS FOR MEN

→ Light colored button up paired with jeans or fitted slacks (don’t forget the belt to match the shoes)

→ Fitted sports jacket and if he’s into Ryan Gosling’s “The Notebook” look – add suspenders.

→ Shoes – something comfortable but also clean (avoid neon running shoes)

PLANNING FOR YOUR PHOTOSHOOT

When it’s picture day, be sure to arrive to the location with NYC traffic and transit in mind. Be EARLY! I always tell myself, if I am not 15 minutes early then I am late.
There will be lots of walking – lots of it. I’m not a fan of sticking at one location. I’d rather give you a tour, and find cool spots for original images in the area of your choice for the session.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING TO YOUR ENGAGEMENT SHOOT

Bring walking shoes that you can easily slip on and off for the “tour,” then change into your gorgeous, less practical shoes for the picture perfect moment.

→ Come to the shoot in your formal outfit and shoes comfortable to walk in

→ Bring a rolling suitcase for easy transportation. Backpacks/duffle bags aren’t encouraged as they can wrinkle your outfit, cause strain to the neck/back, & may even have you break out into a sweat! Not worth it!

→ By request, I can bring fairy lights/sparklers at no extra charge (shoot me a text/ email to confirm you want these for your session) . Feel free to get creative! Some examples: bring a sign that announces your wedding date, a blanket to do more variety of poses, or a champagne with personalized glasses to celebrate during the session. Some couples even bring smoke bombs!! Whatever you think could make for an interesting photo, feel free to bring it!

→ Most humans have things that we are self conscious about which is totally normal. I’m no exception, I tend to look for something wrong with my teeth or side profile. If there’s something you or your fiance don’t want the photos to focus on, let us know! As a photographer, I tend to think that all the authentic elements of people & couples are beautiful, but I also know that we are our biggest critics when it comes to ourselves. Don’t be afraid to point out these elements to me, there’s no judgement at all!

→ Brush your teeth and bring mints before the shoot. Avoid anything other than water before the shoot as it can affect the smell of your breath – you’re going to be kissing & will be very close to your partner’s face for some of these shots. Stinky breath = stinky faces = stinky photos. Keep it clean please!

→ Pack mints, compact mirror, chap stick, lip gloss/stick to retouch after kissing, eye drops in case your eyes become sensitive, and last…the tissues

WHAT AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT IS LIKE

→ You will be guided into poses that look flattering to you – I will be conscious of double chins, slouching backs, hair in the wrong places and awkward legs.

→ There will be times that I will have you two whisper in each others ears, tickle fight, or play tag and role play scenarios like you haven’t seen each other in six months so I can capture authentic fun and sweet emotions.

→ At the end of shoot (if requested) I make it magical – working on long exposure photos or fantasy moments with sparklers and fairy lights to make your shots one-of-a-kind pieces that you want to frame around your home as wall art.

→ Men: Remember to remove wallet/phone/keys from pockets as it affects the focus on the final photo.

→ If you plan to bring your pet – please notify us so we can ensure we have an assistant available to tend to your doggy. Please bring toys and treats to keep them entertained. There is a fee of no more than $50 to add your pup in the shoot. Two dogs – only $100.

“…if I didn’t capture that authenticity during our session, then I didn’t do my job.

As the session comes to an end, we’ve gone to multiple locations, you changed into different garments or accessories, and the time is up, I will announce a 5-15 minute warning to ask if you have any special requests.
This is a good time to whip out your phone with screenshots of any particular photos you really loved. Sometimes my creative brain is overloaded with ideas of the moment that I may miss a pose you really wanted, so don’t be afraid to remind me.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR PHOTO SHOOT

→ Sneak peeks from the session will be available within 7 days.

→ Acne and blemishes or small clothing stains can be removed from photos at no additional charge.

→ Advanced photoshop editing such as people removal, face swap, background distractions, body manipulations, etc. results in an additional charge by a photoshop pro and range anywhere from $10-$40 per photo depending on the edit request(s)

→ Full gallery of best photos edited by Suess Moments will be available for free download in high resolution and social size within 6 weeks. Access to the online gallery will be available for up to 90 days. You can order guaranteed premium quality prints from the online gallery print store and add on personalized USB + box or Custom albums (choice of vegan or leather

“you will know me well enough to be sure I won’t be settling for anything less than amazing”

WHAT NOT TO DO AT YOUR ENGAGEMENT SHOOT

→ Bring kids to the shoot without chaperone during your shoot

→ Bring friends unless they are there to touch up hair/makeup between shots. Friends/ family members who watch the shoot often make couples feel awkward and it’s harder for me (as the photographer) to get you into your comfort zone when people you know are watching. Surprisingly to most people, strangers don’t have close to the same impact as people you know watching.

→ Ditch the gum during the shoot. Gum will make your smiles look crooked and all around no bueno for your shoot.

“I NEVER FELT AWKWARD AND I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE AWKWARD WHEN SHE WAS GOING TO DO CLOSE UP PICTURES AND WHEN WOULD KISS,
BUT IT WAS NOT LIKE THAT AT ALL – IT WAS AMAZING”
